When he heard the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word, he was rewarded with the object that was associated with it.

Another intriguing aspect of how she taught Alex was that she taught him the meanings behind words, not just the sounds. This was a groundbreaking method in the sense that it is usually the case that pet parrots get taught words for their novelty value only. The owners don't care about what they say when they use a certain word. Alex, on the other hand, was referring to exactly what he meant when he used a specific word.

Some scientists believe that it is unfair to compare Alex to humans when it comes to intelligence. They have pointed out that although Alex was capable of communicating but he didn't have the ability to use logic-based expressions such as "if there is x, then there must be y."

What was Alex's personality?

Her research over thirty years on him changed the way we think about animal cognition and communication. After her work with him Dr. Pepperberg went on to conduct studies with other parrots such as Wart and Griffin. She is now an instructor at the University of Washington and continues her pioneering work with birds.
